Toy Trains

On this page the story and photos of my lifetime fascination with toy trains will unfold. You'll see some of my Lionel 027 Trains, American Flyer S Gauge, and Marx Trains and you'll read about my sixty-four years of collecting and operating these colorful trains. Here's my first electric train. Santa brought it in 1940 when I was six years old. A Lionel 027 set with this Torpedo Locomotive #1688. The set has three tinplate cars. I think it was $6.95. A lot of money in 1940!

When the war ended, Lionel started making trains again and in 1948, I bought this Lionel 027 set with my newspaper route earnings. It has this #1655 engine and three cars. It was $29.95. I had to deliver 3,000 newspapers to pay for it!

The higher priced 2026 was an alternate choice to the 1655 I purchased in 1948. It has six drivers and smoke. I bought this in 1982. The GM switcher was repainted and decorated for the Western Maryland Railway.

Here's the 4-4-0 from my Lionel 027 James Gang Set. This was a birthday present from my wife (1982). One of my favorites!

Texas & Pacific Quicksilver Express Alco (1982). Set has powered and unpowered Alco A Units and three matching 027 passenger cars.

Liberty Special Alco (1975). Uncatalogued set includes matching patriotic box cars and caboose.

Marx Commodore Vanderbilt. I always wanted a Marx train and I finally got one in 1995.

Rio Grande F3A (1975). Includes unpowered F3A. Originally part of a 1974 Lionel Service Station Set. Only 3,000 of these sets were produced.

American Flyer S Gauge Reading Atlantic. AF was my second choice in 1948. I had to wait until 1981 to get my Flyer trains.

Lionel, American Flyer, HO, and N Scale.

Lionel from the 1970s and early 1980s. Includes Liberty Special, LASER, James Gang, Uncatalogued NKP K4, and Quicksilver Express.
